How to Convert More Website Visitors into Enquiries

conversionsmall-businesswebsiteenquiriescro

You might be getting a reasonable number of visitors to your website, but if those visitors are leaving without getting in touch, your site is not doing its job. This is one of the most common frustrations small business owners have — and it is rarely about needing more traffic. More often, the problem is in what happens after someone lands on the page.

The process of turning website visitors into enquiries is called conversion rate optimisation, or CRO. It sounds technical, but the idea is simple: small changes to how your website is structured, written, and designed can make a significant difference to how many visitors take the step of contacting you. You do not need more visitors. You need to get more out of the ones you already have.

Why Most Visitors Leave Without Getting in Touch

When a potential customer lands on your website, they are asking themselves a handful of questions within the first few seconds. Can this business help me? Do they seem trustworthy? Is it easy to understand what they do? How do I get in touch?

If your website does not answer those questions quickly and clearly, visitors leave. Not because they are not interested — but because they did not find what they needed fast enough. Research consistently shows that most people decide within seconds whether to stay on a webpage or go back to their search results.

Understanding why people leave is the first step to keeping them.

Your Headline Is Doing More Work Than You Think

The first thing most visitors read on your homepage is your main headline. That headline needs to tell them immediately what you do, who you do it for, and ideally why you are the right choice — all in one clear sentence.

Vague taglines like "Passion. Quality. Results." or "Your local experts" do not do this. They say nothing specific and give visitors no reason to read further. A headline like "Professional window cleaning for homes in Leeds — fully insured, no mess, no fuss" tells someone everything they need to know in seconds.

If your headline could apply to any business in any industry, it is time to rewrite it. Be specific about what you do, who you help, and where you operate. That clarity alone will keep more visitors on the page.

Make It Easy to Get in Touch

One of the most common reasons people do not enquire is that the contact details are buried. A visitor who has to scroll through four pages to find a phone number is a visitor who is going to search for a competitor who makes it easier.

Your phone number and a clear call to action — "Get a free quote," "Book a consultation," "Call us today" — should appear at the top of your homepage without scrolling. It should be visible on every page of your site, not just the contact page.

On mobile, your phone number should be a tap-to-call link. Most people browsing on their phone will not bother typing out a number manually. If they cannot call you with one tap, many of them will not call at all.

Show People Why They Should Choose You

Visitors who reach your website are often comparing you against several other businesses. Trust signals — evidence that you are good at what you do and safe to hire — tip that comparison in your favour.

The most effective trust signals for small businesses are customer testimonials, Google ratings, and any relevant credentials or accreditations. These do not need to be elaborate. Two or three short, specific testimonials ("Chris built us a new website in two weeks and we got our first enquiry within 48 hours of going live — brilliant service") placed near your contact form or call to action are far more persuasive than a long list of feature bullet points.

If you have Google reviews, display your average rating and total number of reviews on your homepage. Visitors trust Google reviews because they know they are independently verified. A business with 47 reviews at 4.9 stars is a very easy business to feel comfortable calling.

Cut Out the Noise

Sometimes a website repels enquiries not because it lacks information, but because it has too much of it. When visitors are faced with ten navigation links, five calls to action, and three different contact forms, the mental effort of deciding what to do next leads many of them to do nothing.

Simplicity converts better than complexity. Every page should have one primary purpose and one primary action you want the visitor to take. Your homepage exists to introduce your business and get people to enquire. Your services page exists to explain what you offer and prompt a next step. Your about page exists to build trust and lead people back towards enquiring.

Remove anything that does not serve that purpose. Fewer choices make decisions easier, and easier decisions produce more enquiries.

Check Your Website on a Mobile Phone

More than half of all web traffic in the UK now comes from mobile devices. If your website is difficult to use on a smartphone — small text, buttons that are too close together, forms that are awkward to fill in — you are losing a significant proportion of potential enquiries before they even start.

Use your own phone to visit your website right now. Can you find the contact details without zooming in? Is the enquiry form easy to fill in with your thumbs? Does the page load in under three seconds? If the answer to any of those is no, that is a problem worth fixing.

Watch What Your Visitors Actually Do

If you have Google Analytics set up on your website, you can see which pages visitors land on, where they go next, and where they tend to leave. You can also see which pages are most commonly visited before someone contacts you — that tells you which content is doing the most persuasive work.

If you do not yet have Google Analytics installed, it is free and straightforward to set up. Even a basic look at which pages people visit and how long they stay will give you useful information about what is working and what is not.

Small Changes, Big Difference

You do not need to rebuild your website from scratch to improve your conversion rate. Often the most impactful changes are the simplest ones: rewriting a vague headline, adding a phone number to the top of the page, placing a testimonial next to your contact form, removing a cluttered navigation menu.

Each of these changes makes it slightly easier for a visitor to decide to get in touch. Together, they can meaningfully increase the number of enquiries your website generates — without spending anything on additional advertising or traffic.

If your website is getting visitors but not producing the enquiries you expected, the problem is almost certainly fixable. Get in touch and we can take a look at your site and tell you exactly what is getting in the way.
